Visit Courtesy Acura to learn about the issues a defective gas cap can cause.
The first of many symptoms of a bad gas cap is likely a gas cap that won’t completely tighten or a loose gas cap. This may not seem important right away, but without an air-tight seal, the fuel system can be contaminated with grime and dirt. If the gas cap isn’t closing properly, check the gasket to be sure it’s not brittle or missing. If you have an old car or truck, be sure the metal gas cap isn’t damaged or bent. Both a bad seal or bent gas cap can lead to the gas cap issues and might even require a replacement from the original manufacturer.
These days you could possibly see no gas cap on new cars, but if your car wasn’t constructed with a capless gas tank, it’s not recommended that you drive without a gas cap. If your car or truck is older, there’s a possibility that gas could leak out from the gas tank during aggressive corners or other enthusiastic driving. If you drive your car without a gas cap, it can lead to poor fuel efficiency because the fuel may evaporate without the correct seal on the tank. The gas smell is the gasoline evaporating from the tank, which causes diminished gas mileage.
What concerns can a loose gas cap cause, well a check engine light? A non-secure gas cap will not only let in dirt and grime, but it can allow fuel vapors to escape. These fuel vapors can produce an error in the emissions system, which could light up the check engine light. Dirt and Grime that seeps into the fuel tank can also contaminate the injectors over time. Perhaps the biggest sign of a bad gas cap is the smell of gasoline in your vehicle.
If you have inspected the gas cap, the problems you are having may be caused by bad gas. If your vehicle has problems starting, will not accelerate, or just is not running smoothly, then you might just have a bad tank of gas.
